Winter

For me, Winter, Steeleye’s latest release (should you not be aware J) doesn’t just embody the spirit of Christmas, it embodies the very soul of Christmas. A more eclectic mix of sounds and emotions would be difficult to find anywhere else, other than one of Steeleye’s albums (in my humble opinion anyway!)

Bright Morning Star makes me think of Fountains of water sparkling in the beautiful, multi-faceted light of the sun – the harmonies are so strong and pure! No one does that quite like SS!! Today at Bethlehem is just a really groovy track that I simply love for its rhythm and sway! Good King Wenceslas??? When I first heard it I thought it was hilarious!!! A brilliant version, but –wow – I can just see “rockers” head-banging to it!!!! It’s amazing and I love it!!! But it does make me laugh!! The backing for Hark the Herald is heavy rock too and just makes you want to dance! For me Down in Yon Forest has overtones of Alison Gross!??

Peter’s violin dances with fire, Maddy’s voice is still so pure and clear it melts you!! Liam is superb on the drums, who could wish for more? Oh –more?? Ken on lead – unsurpassable and Rick’s bass rhythms provide completeness to, what for me is, a line up that lights up the music with passion and supreme musical flair and talent!

Anyway, I could go on and on, but I won’t! J If you want to enjoy the delights of this album and there are many, many more to come besides those I have already mentioned, you must go and buy it!! Enough to say that this is the best Christmas album I have ever owned. It is an excellent mix and I’m sure any Steeleye fan, young or old (!!!) would enjoy it immensely! Well done SS!!! Long may it last!!!!!!!!
