This is the score of the Lincolnshire ballad 'Horkstow Grange' from which
Steeleye Span obtained their name.
It tells the story of a fight between one John 'Steeleye' Span and John
Bowlin.
It was collected by Percy Grainger in 1906 when he was in Brigg on a song
collecting expedition. Tim Hart saw it in the Grainger book and thought that it
would be a great name for a band.
When the rest of the members came to vote for a name for their new band Tim
Hart's suggestion 'Steeleye Span' won the day. No one seemed to have noticed
that there were six ballot papers but only five band members. Tim later admitted
that he had voted twice.
The rest is history.
