Steeleye Span18th March 2004, IPAC. Wollongong A review by Bob Graffham
I cannot accept that SS could drop so
dramatically in 24 hours (according to Clive Byerley
and his review of Melbourne).
I saw (and heard them) at the IPAC in
Wollongong on 18th March and must say "They were at their ultimate
best" The sound was absolutely first class. Maddy was
unbelievable in hitting the extreme high's and every bit as good as the
earlier days. If Clive were a true Connoisseur
of sound, he would know that no-one sits up front and below the stage to
listen to the music. I had an acquaintance who was at the IPAC
who had purchased a seat up front. I met him after the show, when he informed
me that he had moved to the back when he realised the sound was compromised so
close in! It was my pleasure to meet SS again
and I hope the opportunity can arise at least once more?
It was interesting that the when the public
gathered at the bar afterwards to meet the band,. That the management tried to
make special arrangements for me to meet SS and have my original LP's of "Hark
The Village Wait" and "Please To See
The King" (both on the Mooncrest label of course) signed? I
informed them that the band where coming out to sign autographs etc. They
asked how I knew? It was clearly evident to me that none of
the public or the management had realised that Maddy, Peter, Rick, Liam
and Ken had been comfortably mingling amongst us at the bar before the
concert!
My wish would be that this concert will be recorded
for future release on DvD!
The night was easily everything a true longtime Steeleye
Span follower, originally from Yeovil, Somerset. But now of NSW in
Australia for 25 years, could ever hope for...
